To:  Parents of Students at Norwich and Grasso Technical Schools,

On mornings when Montville Public Schools start at their normal times and the technical schools have a two-hour delay, we are not able to transport students at the delayed time as we are in the midst of our district bus routes.  We also cannot transport the tech. students at their regular time because the superintendents in Norwich and Groton have determined that the roads in their towns are not safe for an on-time start.  The morning of Jan. 10, 2023 was a perfect example of our dilemma.  Roads in Montville were safe and roads in Norwich were flooded to such a degree that schools ultimately ended up being canceled.

Our district has contact with our Public Works Department, the local police department, and dispatch, and we have a staff member who drives the town roads and reports their condition.  All of this occurs between 4:00-5:30 a.m. and then we make a determination about whether we need to delay or close school.  If we determine our schools are on time and the technical schools are delayed, we then put out a School Messenger notice to tech. school families telling them we cannot transport their students to school due to road conditions.  We recognize that the timing of this notice is not ideal, however there are a lot of quick decisions that need to be made early in the morning.

Please be aware of the possibility that there might be a day when tech. schools are delayed and Montville Public Schools are not; on those days we cannot provide morning transportation to the tech. schools.  These situations are rare because we usually have the similar conditions, but that is not always the case.  We understand this is an inconvenience, but we must hold student safety as our prime consideration.
